A systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety profile of tranexamic acid in terms of reducing blood loss and lowering transfusion needs for patients undergoing caesarean section or vaginal delivery. The results demonstrated that use of this agent decreased intra-, postoperative, and total blood loss by a mean volume of 141.25 mL, 36.42 mL, and 154.25 mL in caesarean section. It also reduced intra-, postoperative, and total blood loss by a mean volume of 22.88 mL, 41.24mL, and 84.79 mL in those who had undergone vaginal delivery. Moreover, tranexamic acid lowered the occurrence rate of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and severe PPH. In addition, it reduced the risk of blood transfusions. No increased risk of deep vein thrombosis was associated with the administration of this agent. Thus, it can be stated that tranexamic acid appears to be a valuable option in this set of patients.
